Judy’s Insights: Resume Tips

With over 25 years in the executive search industry, I have read thousands of resumes.  I have read some incredible resumes, and I have read some bizarre resumes, and I have read some hysterical resumes. I get asked on a daily basis for advice on resumes.  Here is my advice and I will make it short and simple:

  1. No executive will read your entire resume, and no one wants to read long paragraphs outlining your skills.  People will scan your resume for relevant information.  Use bullets and bold font for emphasis with key points.  Get rid of the long paragraphs.

  2. When describing your work history state the name of the company, who they are, and what they sell.  There is nothing more annoying for a hiring executive than to look at a resume and say “Who is this company, what do they do, and is it relevant to the job that I am filling?”.  This puts the onus on the hiring executive to look up the company where you were employed.  Don’t do that because you will lose your audience.

That’s it.  Just do these two simple things and you will get more traction in your job search.
