Judy’s Insights: Think You’re Just Chatting with a Recruiter?

As an executive recruiter, I often hear candidates say things like, "Oh, I would never say that in a real interview." This statement always leaves me puzzled. What do they think the meeting with me is?

Let me clear something up: If you're meeting with me, you are in an interview. My role is not just to casually chat about your experience but to evaluate whether you are a strong enough candidate to present to my client. This is your chance to demonstrate why you are the right fit for a top-level role.

The Role of the Recruiter

When you're talking to me, it's not just a screening call. I'm assessing your qualifications, your communication style, and how well you represent yourself under pressure. By the time you meet with my client, I need to have full confidence in your abilities, because my reputation is on the line just as much as yours.

Why Treat Every Interview Like It's the Final One

Every conversation you have with a recruiter should be approached with the same level of seriousness as a meeting with a hiring manager. You wouldn’t walk into a final round interview unprepared or off-guard, would you? Treat our conversation with the same importance. I need to hear your polished pitch, your clear articulation of accomplishments, and your ability to address challenges.

If you’re not giving me your best, why would I put you in front of my client?

How to Approach Your Recruiter Interview

1. Be Prepared: Know your numbers, metrics, and key achievements. Be ready to discuss how you’ve driven results in previous roles.
2. Be Authentic: Don't rely on what you think I want to hear. Be real, but also strategic about how you present yourself.
3. Ask Questions: I'm here to guide you through the process, but I’m also observing how well you communicate and engage in the conversation.
4. Follow Up Professionally: Just like any other interview, following up shows me that you're genuinely interested in the opportunity and take the process seriously.

At the end of the day, my job is to find the best person for the role. If you’re meeting with me, you’re already in the running. Treat it like the real interview it is, because you won’t get to the next step unless you do.
